How to layer skincare products
Somewhere along the way, skincare layering became its own subculture. Spreadsheets. Diagrams. Fifteen-step routines with waiting periods between each product.
It doesn't have to be this complicated. There's one rule that covers most of it.
The rule: thinnest to thickest
Apply products in order of texture, lightest first. Water-based serums go before oils. Oils go before moisturizers. Moisturizers go before SPF. That's it.
This works because thinner formulas absorb quickly and penetrate deeper. Thicker formulas sit closer to the surface and seal everything in. Apply them in the wrong order and the heavier product creates a barrier that blocks what comes after it.
A simple morning routine in order
- Cleanser
- Vitamin C serum (optional)
- Lightweight serum
- Moisturizer (if needed)
- SPF
A simple evening routine in order
- Cleanser
- Retinol or bakuchiol serum
- Moisturizer
That's a complete routine. Everything else is optional.
A few things worth knowing
Wait about 30 seconds between steps to let each product absorb before adding the next. You don't need to time it precisely — just don't stack products on top of wet skin.
If you're using active ingredients like vitamin C and retinol, keep them in separate routines. Vitamin C in the morning, retinol or bakuchiol in the evening. Not because they cancel each other out, but because it simplifies things and both are more effective in their respective routines.
The honest truth
Most layering anxiety comes from having too many products, not from doing it wrong. Simplify the routine and the layering problem mostly solves itself.
