pH in skincare: why 5.0 matters

Nobody buys a serum thinking about pH. And honestly, why would you? It sounds like a chemistry class you didn't sign up for.

But pH is quietly one of the most important factors in whether your skincare actually works — and most brands don't talk about it at all.

What pH is and why your skin has one

pH measures how acidic or alkaline something is on a scale of 0 to 14. Your skin's natural pH sits between 4.5 and 5.5 — slightly acidic. That acidity is intentional. It supports the skin barrier, keeps the microbiome balanced, and helps your skin defend itself against bacteria and environmental damage.

When something disrupts that balance, your skin lets you know. Tightness after cleansing, unexpected breakouts, products that suddenly feel irritating — these are often pH problems in disguise.

What throws it off

Harsh cleansers are the biggest culprit. Many traditional soaps sit around pH 9 or 10, which is extremely alkaline relative to your skin. Use them regularly and you're stripping the acid mantle your skin works hard to maintain.

Over-exfoliating, hard water, and certain skincare products formulated without attention to pH can all cause the same issue.

Why product pH matters too

Here's where it gets interesting. The pH of a product affects how well its active ingredients actually work.

Niacinamide performs best in the 5 to 7 range. Bakuchiol is effective across a wider range but still benefits from a balanced formula. Peptides are pH-sensitive and can degrade in formulas that are too acidic or too alkaline.

A beautifully formulated product with the wrong pH is a beautifully formulated product that isn't doing much.

What pH 5.0 means for Elixir no. 1

Elixir no. 1 is pH-balanced at 5.0 — right in the sweet spot of your skin's natural range. That means it works with your skin rather than against it, active ingredients perform as intended, and your barrier stays calm and intact.

It's a small number that does a lot of work.

Elixir no. 1 is pH-balanced at 5.0 so every active ingredient performs at its best — niacinamide, bakuchiol, Matrixyl 3000, Tripeptide-29, and more. Shop Elixir no. 1 →
